Nikon’s 12.1Mp P90 has a remarkably similar footprint to its ancestor, the P80, but close examination reveals some external differences…At the rear of the Nikon P90, a bright 3in screen stands out. This can be tilted to give the best view when shooting at low or high angles, and the main controls – shutter button, mode dial and D-Pad – feel really solid and durable. The Nikon P90 has a 24X optical zoom that’s capable of 26mm at the widest setting (f/2.8) and 624mm at the longest (f/5.0) with a focus range of 50cm to infinity. Close-up fans are well catered for with a macro mode that’s found within the Scene modes, allowing for ultra close shots to be taken within a centimetre of a subject.
Other useful features include Face Priority AF and Active D-lighting to help restore detail in under-exposed images. In the shooting menu there are four metering modes – Matrix, Centre-weighted, Spot and Spot AF to help get well-exposed images. The Nikon P90 offers a broad ISO range of 64-6400 but, as with most superzooms, resolution is reduced at the high end with just 3Mp on offer above ISO 1600.
The slender design incorporates a fairly small handgrip and in the hand, it has a diminutive feel – although it’s 70g heavier with its rechargeable battery. At £359, it doesn’t offer as much as some of its cheaper rivals.
