The Coolpix S60 from Nikon combines a 10Mp sensor with a 5x optical zoom that ranges from 33-165mm. Spinning the camera around and taking a look at the rear shows off its impressive 3.5in sized screen that takes up the entire space on the back of the camera. There’s no D-pad to be seen and all of the functions with the exception of the On/Off and shutter button are controlled using the S60’s touch screen. The lack of buttons on the rear gives it an ultra slim line look and you’ll easily glide this compact into your pocket.
There’s a protective lens cover on the front to protect the all-important glass and a built in flash that’s neatly positioned alongside. Head into the scene modes and you’re given a wide variety to choose from – 19 in all including panorama assist and night portrait mode.
The S60 quickly springs into life and there are two vertical taskbars either side of the main screen. On the left you can hit play to view the images and quickly change the flash, self-timer and macro modes. On the right is the zoom control and home option, which allows you to access the menu. The menu itself is beautifully laid out. It’s the easy to scroll through on the right hand side and best of all the text appears in a large, clear font.
The ISO range of the S60 is 64-3200 – but if you’re looking for maximum image quality you won’t want to exceed ISO 400. Testing the camera at ISO 800 and 1600 showed significant digital noise in the test images and if you raise the ISO to 3200 you need to remember the image quality reduces to just 5Mp.
The materials that have been used on the S60 give it a slightly plasticky feel but this is a very minor point. So if you’re looking for a user-friendly slim line compact with an easy to operate touch screen and have £250 to spare this S60 makes a good choice, but be careful at high ISO.
