This G2 has an 8.0MP sensor and 38-152mm 4x optical zoom lens. You’re given seven shooting modes to experiment with, including the 12 different scene types in Scene mode such as Museum, Night Landscape and Night Portrait settings. This model is also equipped with the latest auto-brightness LCD technology on its 2.7in colour monitor, designed to offer perfect screen visibility for both indoor and outdoor shots. There is no viewfinder with this compact and the rear of the camera is taken up by the majority of the screen. This leaves the user with a small rotational selective dial and D-pad. As well as Face Detection AF, there’s Electronic Image Stabilization to help you capture sharper images and prevent handshake.
Accessing the different shooting modes is via the fully rotational selective dial and just below is the D-pad. The main downside to these is their size and they appear smaller than the dials on other GE cameras, such as the GE E1035. In-between the selective dial and D-pad are the Face Detection and Menu buttons, which could accidentally be pressed by scrolling on the selective dial. The Zoom button is the same as the one fitted to all GE camera products and is not the most pleasing button to use, with no real degree of accuracy or movement. The Electronic Image Stabilization that’s offered will boost your ISO and increase your chances of capturing a specific moment but will also lead to a noticeable decrease in your image quality, unlike the equivalent Lens Shift or CCD shift that you can find on other compacts. The ISO range may not be as wide as the E1035 model – only going up to ISO 1600 – but the poor results that we came up with on ISO 3200 with the E1035 suggests you’re not missing out on much. This camera might suit someone who wants a lightweight, pocketable camera, but the average results mean that you could look at alternative options for a similar price.
