The Fujifilm FinePix Z200fd is has an elegantly stylish, sophisticated design with a high-quality, brushed-metal finish that builds on the success of the Z100fd. Perfectly sprung, the lens and flash cover slides diagonally downwards, with a nice touch being a brief glow from the emotive ‘Z’ on the front signalling that it’s ready for business.

The FinePix Z200fd employs a 10Mp sensor and 5x optical zoom, ranging from 33-165mm – a very handy focal length for general shooting, but something slightly wider would have been nice, guaranteeing you’d get everyone in a group shot, but this is just a minor point.

The camera features Dual Image Stabilisation with a CCD-shift mechanism as well as a max ISO of 1600. Along with the now standard Face Detection mode on the Z200fd, there are two extra self-timer modes – Couple Timer and Group Timer. Couple Timer will only take the shot once the Z200fd can recognise two faces in the scene; it works a treat and saves you having to run to get yourself in the frame as you do with a conventional self-timer! Group Timer works in a similar fashion – this time up to a selectable 4 faces.

The scroll-wheel interface makes navigation quick, while the menu is straightforward and easy to operate. Images from the Z200fd were good – punchy colours and well exposed, though try to avoid going above ISO 800 as digital Noise becomes quite evident.

The Z200fd is a great pocket, slim-line compact camera. It may not have the full photographic control that some people desire, but for those who just want to be able to take hassle-free pictures when they’re out and about, then the FinePix Z200fd is the perfect choice.
