The F100fd from Fujifilm houses a 12Mp sensor and is fitted with a 5x optical zoom lens, equivalent to 28-140mm on most 35mm camera so you have both the wide and telephoto option at your fingertips for a wide variety of general shooting conditions. There are plenty of shooting modes to use including a Portrait Enhancer that’s designed to smooth skin tones, along with a fireworks mode. On the back of the camera you get a 2.7in TFT LCD screen that gives perfectly clear results with a well designed arrangement of buttons. Fujifilm have introduced a scroll wheel that offers easing navigation and clear explanations on screen to aid the user.
The F100fd feels well built and very comfortable in the hand and is the perfect pocket size. The elegant styling of this compact will attract some admiring looks and if the black version isn’t for you Fujifilm have released a dark silver alternative, but the black one would be our first choice. The 5x optical zoom lens works extremely smoothly through it’s range with the zoom button neatly placed around the shutter for fast and easy shooting. Testing the ISO showed that you can work comfortably at IS0 400 and even IS0 800 gave strong results that were impressive, with no noticeable fringing, but we did notice some mosaicing at high ISO. Be careful with the ultrahigh sensitivity though, that will reduce your resolution at ISO 6400 & 12800 to just 3Mp. The Fujifilm F100fd is a good solid compact, with a modern design and reliable performance. However, the lack of any adjustable manual modes (no aperture or shutter priority modes for example) let’s the F100fd down slightly – a feature found on earlier models such as the brilliant F31fd.
It’s a perfect compact that’s well priced for those who love their automatic modes but if you want to have further control there are alternative compact models available.
