The FinePix F50fd is one of a growing number of compacts to include a 12Mp sensor. There is a 3x optical zoom lens with a range of 36-108mm, while camera shake is dealt with via a CCD-shift mechanism.

There is a range of shooting modes, including Aperture and Shutter priority for a certain amount of creative control, along with exposure compensation of up to 2 stops in either direction.

The F50fd also has a dual card slot – accepting both SD and xD-Picture cards, while the ISO range is between 100-1600, but if necessary it can also be boosted to 3200 and 6400, with the resolution dropping off to 6Mp and 3Mp. The F50fd is easy to operate, with quick access to the image stabilisation and Face Detection settings, while the AF puts in a solid performance, with minimal hunting.
