The Powershot SX40 HS is Canon’s latest release into the superzoom market, replacing the previous SX30 model. Still retaining most of the key design features from its predecessor, the SX40 builds on the original blueprint with the inclusion of Canon’s new DIGIC 5 image processor, which enables rapid-fire shooting up to 10.3fps.
A new 12.1MP CMOS chip teamed with Canon’s latest HS (high-sensitivity) system has also been added, which is able to capture large 4000x3000px JPEG stills, and also full 1080p HD video by pressing the dedicated video capture button on the camera body. Aside from these new updates, there are a number of features that have been left unchanged, most noticeable of which is the rear vari-angle screen. This 2.7in, 230k-dot LCD looks rather outdated placed next to its competitors – a slightly larger or higher-res monitor would have been a welcome addition to this new model.
