The Canon Powershot S95 is a neat compact with a 10Mp CCD sensor (1/1.7in type), measuring 7.6x5.7mm.
Featuring Canon’s DIGIC 4 processor technology, the Canon Powershot S95 records natively in the 4:3 aspect but also gives you the option of recording at 16:9, 3:2, 1:1 and the more uncommon 4:5 aspect. JPEG and RAW formats are supported with the option of recording both at once, and as well as a solid ISO range of 80-3200, it’s equipped with a fast f/2.0 lens that’s optically stabilised, correcting for camera shake by up to 4-stops. Testing this, we managed to achieve sharp shots at 1/4sec. The 3.8x zoom offers a decent range of 28-105mm in 35mm terms and movies are captured at 720p@24fps. For close-ups there’s a macro mode that enables you to focus as close as 5cm from your subject and at the rear, the 3in screen offers 100% coverage and features a 461K-dot resolution. With its diminutive size you might think it’s hard to use, but the large buttons and clear layout make it quite the opposite. Operation is quick and there’s a tactile manual adjustment ring around the lens. The mode dial is well placed for easy thumb control and overall, the Canon Powershot S95 feels superbly made.
