The Canon PowerShot G9 has a stunning design and impressive build quality but it’s no lightweight compact – physically or figuratively!

This new Canon PowerShot model is a modest upgrade over its predecessor, the G7, with key developments being an increase in resolution to 12.1Mp, a larger 3in LCD, and the ability to shoot RAW. The Canon PowerShot  G9 is more of a traditional compact and has all the usual Scene and Auto modes, as well as the advanced options, which include manual exposure control, bracketing, and three ND filter settings for working in bright conditions.
The Canon PowerShot G9 has a versatile 6x optical zoom with built-in Image Stabilisation. The lens covers an equivalent of 35-210mm in film terms, and gives good reach at the long end, but its range is limited at the wide end. Accessories are available to extend the focal range, but you’ll need an adapter (£17) to be able to attach the 2x tele converter or 0.75x wide converter, both of which are £99.
The hotshoe enables use of Canon EX SpeedLite flashguns as well as studio flash. On the performance side, AF is quick, and in manual focus mode, a magnified square on the screen ensures your shots are pin-sharp in the critical area. This is particularly useful for close-up work when shooting in the Macro mode.
The LCD is a joy, too; not only does the brightness of the display change as aperture and shutter values are adjusted, but there’s also a histogram and exposure level indicator, making exposure assessments really intuitive.
With a host of function buttons and dials, the body looks quite busy and a little complicated, but having access to a wealth of features without the need to delve into the menus makes the handling of the Canon PowerShot G9 compact feel akin to using a D-SLR. The thumb rest on the back gives a good grip when shooting one-handed, and although it takes a little getting used to, the scroll wheel is great for whizzing through menus.

Verdict
If you want a top compact to cover for your D-SLR, then the Canon PowerShot G9 ticks all the boxes. Handling is great and the clever design with good button placement makes it intuitive to use.

This is by far the best compact I have ever used, Nice sharp images with natural colours, the optical viewfinder is a good size and bright, if I have any complaint of this camera it would be that my previous camera ( Powershot pro 1 ) had a liveview screen which tilted and rotated making it easy to use in difficult viewing spaces, but this model does offer excellent macro capabilities etc which on balance more than make up this shortfall.

What can I say, the perfect compact to supplement your DSLR. Great for those moments when the DSLR is to big and conspicuous without any loss to image quality...and it now has RAW to boot!

I use Canon DSLR's for my business, but still have a passion for image making when out with the family or down the pub etc. Prior to the G9, I used a 10D SLR for my "pub" camera because occasionally I would want to use RAW for the odd grab shot. RAW capture is now a feature of this fantastic bit of kit and I have bought two as a result - the second one was for a colleague. The image quality is fantastic and when my friends use it, they appear to be happy with the simplicity of its features. The review in Practical Photography for this compact said everything I would like to have said and more, but that's one of the many reasons why I subscribe - the statement "Reviews you can trust" says it all.
