The Canon IXUS 950 IS packs in a 4x optical zoom lens, running from 35-140mm, with Canon’s Image Stabilisation (IS) to combat camera shake. The IS system incorporates three options – Panning, Continuous and Shoot Only. There’s an optical viewfinder – something of a rarity – but it’s very small and cramped, so it’s better to use the 2.5in screen which is nice and sharp.

The IXUS 950 IS has a range of Scene modes, but with the command dial set to M you can control the metering, exposure compensation and white-balance options (but not aperture or shutter speed). The menu system is nice and clear, while the AF is quick and responsive. The built-in face-detection system works well, tracking the subject.

Image quality was good, producing well-exposed shots with good high ISO Noise performance.
