The Canon 7D represents a new product line for Canon and sits in its EOS range between the 50D and 5D MkII.

The first thing that strikes you about the Canon 7D is its superb build quality, which certainly makes it feel like a serious camera. Despite the mag-alloy body, refined finish and all-weather sealing though, it doesn’t seem too heavy - no doubt thanks to the comfortable handgrip. Canon users familiar with the 30/40/50D series will feel right at home with the layout, too. The dual-function buttons on the top plate remain and layout of the rear is also very similar with just one or two new additions.
It’s in the features department that the 7D has really moved on. The autofocus system has been overhauled and now includes 19 selectable AF targets – all the more accurate cross-type variety. There’s a range of new AF modes as well, including Spot AF for greater precision and a Zone AF mode that groups 4 targets in clusters, a feature we found  really handy. AF performance was very fast, but not quite as accurate as that on the D300S.
The 7D’s sensor packs a massive 18Mp resolution, making large, high-quality prints possible, and benefits from an increased sensitivity range, running from ISO 100-12,800. The Dual DIGIC 4 processor churns through at 8fps, making this camera ideal for action photography, and a new iFCL 63-Zone Dual Layer metering system means accurate exposures.
Other features include 100% viewfinder coverage and wireless flash capabilities using the pop-up flash as a commander unit – a first for a Canon D–SLR and a feature many users have been crying out for. There are also some exciting HD video features including 1080p capture at 24fps for a cinematic feel, 720p at 50fps for slow-motion effects, and external mic compatibility for better sound.

Additions include buttons to access the new Quick Start menu, RAW/JPEG for a one shot image quality change and a Start Stop button for activating Live View or recording HD video footage

Before purchasing EOS7D I was using EOS40D, which was also an incredible camera. However, moving from 40D to 7D is not just a simple upgrading, it moving into a new world. First of all, the image quality and the utilization of the lenses is much different. The images produced from my lenses are much more crisp and sharp. Noice reduction compared to 40D is tremendous. With 40D using ISO higher than 640-800 was producing not very good images. On the contrary, images with 7D have a very good noice level even at much higher ISO levels (eg 1640-2000). Very important aspect is the wireless triggering of the flash. Excellent addition to the camera. Only negative is that it is still using compact flash cards and it only has one slot whereas similar level cameras such as Nikon D7000 has 2 shots for SD cards, which are much cleaper and offers the benefit of backup at real time on the second card
