Venue information
Ynys-hir reserve is formed of a mix of oak woodland with wet grassland and estuarine salt marshes, stretching along the south side of the Dyfi estuary in Mid Wales. A network of short and long nature trails allows you to explore the reserve. Spring is the best time to visit the woodland, when the full range of typical welsh birds are here - pied flycatchers, redstarts and red kites. Grey herons and little egrets nest in the treetops. Summer brings family flocks of waders, such as lapwings and redshanks, and some very special dragonflies and butterflies. The estuary is at its best for birds in the autumn and winter, when large numbers of ducks and geese feed on the salt marshes and farmland. Rare Greenland white-fronted geese share the marshes with shelducks, pintails and wigeons. Birds of prey are regular too. All can be seen from the observation hides.
Venue verdict: Relatively good for bird photography, although long lenses will help enormously.

The point on the map is actually Newport Gwent - an Industrial town. I hope you won't be too disappointed when you get there, just don't expect a beach or any Rare Greenland white-fronted geese
