Newport Bay
| Directions: |
Newport Bay is located on the north side of Newport in Pembrokeshire. Follow the minor road north out of the village, across the river Afon Nyfer. After about a mile follow signs to the golf course, to the left. You’ll find a car park just past the golf course at the end of the road. There’s a footpath leading north alongside the golf course leading to the best locations. |
| Accessibility: |
There’s good parking here, but you need to walk along the coast about a mile to get the best views. The path is a little steep in places, and access to the shore is tricky. It’s best to get to a where the footpath crosses a small stream, where it’s possible to scramble down to the shore. |
| Costs: |
There’s a charge for the car park at busy times of the year. |
| Best time to visit: |
The sun sets behind Dinas Head, a small island across the bay, so arrive a couple of hours before sunset to give you time to get into position. |
Venue information
At the northern end of the Pembrokeshire coast path, the Newport Bay area is less popular with walkers than the southern parts of the path. You’re much more likely to have the place to yourself here than the areas around St Davids, making it feel that bit more special and personal. This feeling of isolation is spoilt initially by the nearby golf course, but you’re soon past this and within a few minutes you could be miles from anywhere. The walk to the small stream is short, but passes over some pretty high cliffs, so be ready for a little exertion along the way. Once you’ve crossed the small bridge over the stream you can clamber down to the shore, past some small cascading waterfalls. Once on the shore you’ll find the rocks have been eroded into fascinating shapes and lines, which make perfect foreground interest, although take care as they can be as slippery as ice when they’re wet. As with all coastal locations, watch the tides as it’s easy to get caught out if you venture too far out. Take a wide-angle lens and ND grads to make the most of the sunset over the bay.
For the less energetic, there are also some magnificent views of the cliffs from the path alongside the golf course. This is only a very short walk from the car park, but take care not to get too close to the edge, as the cliff top is unstable.
Venue verdict: Towering cliffs, plenty of foreground interest in the rocky shore and a backdrop of Dinas Head make this an excellent coastal location.

As I remember less the fear factor. Those scared of heights (me) or with low mobility would struggle. Nonetheless great pangs of nostalgia - beautiful area & photos - thanks
