Porth Oer (Whistling Sands)
Venue information
The secluded and isolated beach at Porth Oer is the perfect spot for escaping the crowds. Photographically it's the low cliffs, beautiful sand and the large solitary rock near the middle of the beach which make it a great location. At low tide the sand stretches far out into the bay, with the rock isolated and surrounded by featureless sand. But when the tide is in the sea flows around the rock, making it even more photogenic. Porth Oer is also known as Whistling Sands because of the sound made by the sand as you walk on it. The 'whistle' is apparently caused by the size of the sand particles, while this doesn't really help your photography it is worth listening out for on your walk across the beach. Just don't get carried away and leave footprints where you might want to shoot if you can help it.
Venue Verdict: Go here out of the summer season and you'll think that you've discovered your own 'secret' private beach.
