Venue information

The reserve is part of the Loch Leven National Nature Reserve and it is to the Loch and surrounding wet grassland that pink-footed and greylag geese, whooper swans and thousands of dabbling ducks are attracted each winter. In summer, ospreys fish in the Loch and the grassland provides nesting sites for redshanks, snipe and lapwings. A trail from the visitor centre via a stepped underpass leads to three viewing hides overlooking the wetlands and loch and offers close up access to the wildlife.

Venue verdict: Okay, but there are better locations for photographing wading birds and migrants.

Further to my recent post. The rating I gave for accessibility is for the hides and relates to the able bodied. As per Walter's post, the hides are not easily accessed by those who have mobility problems or are confined to a wheelchair. Apologies for any confusion.

I totally agree with Walter. Great for bird watching, but very poor for photographers. Hides are easily accessible for the able bodied and are available 24/7 for RSPB members which is great for early morning/late evening use. However the hides are way too far back from the action, even for large birds such as Grey Herons. I struggled even with 700mm+. Also, opening the windows for 'glass free' shots can't easily be done without everything making for the hills. Best shots of the day with young rabbits playing by their burrows, just outside the hide!

Vane Farm an RSPB site is easy to get to by car, not sure about public transport. There is ample free car parking, and the site is popular and attracts visitors from all over the world. I have been several times over the years and there has been substantial changes in the site since 2005. Whilst the three hides are easily accessable by mobile users, they are not accessible for those who have mobility problems or are confined to a wheelchair. The mobility impaired are catered for within the sites cafeteria, which has a superb view point, large windows and is fitted with scopes and binoculars are available. In fact this is the popular options for most bird watchers, you are in the warm, have access to scopes and reference books. There is a nice walk round the mountain at the back of the site, again this is not suitable for those who lack mobility and for the very unfit. The RSPB volunteers are very friendly and knowledgeable regarding the site and teh environment it resides in. For a bird watcher/lover it is ideal, for the wildlife photographer it is not so good. To capture images of the birds from the hides you need long fast lenses, between 400 and 500, unless you are very lucky and the birds come near the hides. There are two garden sites where you can see the usual small birds, blue tits etc., again patience is needed to capture images. In all not the best place for a photographer, but for the bird lover is is excellent.
