Loch Garten
| Directions: |
Stickle Ghyll is located in the Langdale Fells around 6 miles north west of Ambleside. Follow the signs for the New Hotel at Langdale on the B5343 and there’s a pay and display car park just past the hotel. Grid ref: NY293066. The footpath is a little steep in places, but the lower waterfalls on Stickle Ghyll are only a short distance from the car park. There are more waterfalls all the way up to Stickle Tarn for the more energetic explorer. |
| Costs: |
Car park pay and display. |
| Best time to visit: |
The colour of the fells around Stickle Ghyll really come alive in autumn. The waterfalls are in shadow early and late in the day as they’re surrounded by high fells, so they’re best visited during the day. |
Venue information
Loch Garten is the ancestral home of the osprey in Scotland. The Osprey Centre, set amongst the rare native Caledonian pinewood of Abernethy Forest, overlooks the nest of these spectacular fish-eating birds of prey. The Osprey Watch is suitable for all ages and abilities, with only a short walk along a firm flat track through the native Scottish pinewoods to the purpose built visitor centre and shop. There are also other, longer, trails you can use to explore the surrounding forest. Together with stunning views over Loch Garten and nearby nature trails, there are plenty of opportunities to experience Abernethy's special wildlife, including red squirrels, dragonflies, crested tits and Scottish crossbills. The Loch Garten Osprey Centre also opens at dawn each spring (April to mid-May) to enable people who want to see capercaillie, to do so in a controlled way, minimising disturbance to these spectacular birds during the crucial lekking period. The capercaillie is our largest and rarest woodland grouse and visitors can view these birds directly close to the centre. Please bear in mind that it can get very busy during the peak “watching” season.
Venue verdict: A great place to see ospreys but not the best to photograph them. It’s also possibly the best chance for photo enthusiasts to see wild capercaillie. It’s definitely worth a visit.

This entry seems to have got mixed up as it gives directions to Ambleside but describes Loch Garten between Aviemore and Granton on Spey in Scotland.
look at map ref NH9715.
