Elgol - Isle of Skye

Directions: From Kyle of Lochalsh head south on Church Road towards Main Street. At Main Street turn right, then right again at A87/Main Street and follow the A87. At Kyleakin Roundabout, take the 3rd exit and stay on the A87. Finally turn left at the B8083.
Accessibility: Lots of the walks are on steep slopes and stony beaches. Some have gravel paths others are over boggy land and mountainsides. Access to Loch Coruisk is via boat.
Costs: All areas are free including the bridge across to the island.
Best time to visit: The summer is warmer, but can still be wet at times, and the midges are usually active from June to September. Winter days are shorter and can be wet and cold, but there are occasional clear days when you can see the snow on the Cullins.

Venue information

The village of Elgol is dispersed over the hillside above the jetty and nearby moorings. To the north is a pebble beach that leads you past a large outcrop of rock and across Loch Scavaig to the mouth of the Cullins. From Elgol visitors can journey into the centre of the Cullin Ridge.

Since the early 1990’s Bella Jane Boat Trips have been taking visitors to and from the head of Loch Scavaig, from there it is a simple 1/4mile walk to Loch Coruisk. There is also the option of a similar service offered by Misty Isle Boat Trips.

Whilst in Elgol it is worth taking the road that runs for a mile and a half over Strathaird to the settlement at Glasnakille. There are amazing views south east towards Tarskavaig and the Sleat Peninsula.

Venue verdict: An excellent location for landscapes with brilliant views looking over the main Cuillin Ridge.

The Isle of Skye has many great vantage points for sunrises and sunsets. The roads on the Isle are treacherous so be sure to careful when stopping to take photos.

My daughter lives on Skye and I have visited Elgol a few times throughout my travels. You get an amazing sunset if the conditions are right. Also, don't forget to visit Cill Chriosd, the old church on the road to Elgol. Well worth going out of your way for.

I visited in April this year and found the scenery stunning. The single width road was quite busy so I would imagine it could be frustrating in peak season. Well worth a visit.
