Highland Wildlife Park

Directions: The Highland Wildlife Park is seven miles south of Aviemore. Travelling north from Inverness on the A9, turn off for Kingussie/Kincraig, and follow the B9152 north. From Perth, take the A9 and turn off south of Aviemore to Kincraig, then as before.
Accessibility: Open daily, except in extreme weather (ie heavy snow). There’s a good road system that provides access to the main site for photographing red deer. Wolves and other species (eg lynx and snow monkeys) are in enclosures: a platform gives great views over the wolves’ large enclosure. For improved access, attend one of Practical Photography’s reader workshops.
Costs: £10 adults; concessions available. Photo workshops cost around £125 for a 2-day course.
Best time to visit: Late autumn and winter for wolves and deer.

Venue information

The Highland Wildlife Park enjoys a beautiful setting, with the magnificent Cairngorms as a backdrop. There are many species to photograph, several of them endangered, and the park now homes non-Scottish species, such as snow monkeys. The wolves’ enclosure is three acres in size and provides a naturalistic setting for the wolves, who exhibit relatively wild behaviour. For many of the animals here long telephoto lenses are a real bonus (400mm+).

Venue verdict: Although you won’t get full-frame wolf portraits here, this is the best site in the UK for photographing wolves in a natural environment.

A great place to obtain shots of many animals.Zoo shots never work for me but his place is set up so that bars etc are not always in your way. If in this part of Scotland you must spend the day snapping away, winter would be the best time for the wolves with snow on the ground.

An absolute gem of a place, a little off the beaten track but well worth the vist, easy to get to straight off the A9 or from Aviemore. I have to disagree with the previous reviewer in that, in my opinion, the park is anything but rundown, the RZSS are in fact in the process of heavily upgrading both this park and Edinburgh Zoo with many new, modern enclosures and new animals being introduced. The recent addition of a new hilltop viewpoint with stunning views across the Spey Valley being one case in point, along with the fabulous new Red Panda exhibit; You'll never get closer to these lovely animals and the enclosure is well designed from a photography point of view with only a waist height physical barrier in sections meaning no bars, wire or glass in the way. The wolf enclosure was recognised as the best of its type in the world a few years ago and it also provides ample opportunities for photographers; full frame shots of the wolves heads are perfectly possible with a modest 300mm lens (there are one or two on my profile ;-) ) The forest animals section is challenging for photographers, being sited in amongst the trees with very little light, but here can be found one of the most reliable locations in the area for photographing (semi) wild red squirrels at the feeding stations and surrounding trees. Other animal highlights include Snow Monkeys with their own lake, Arctic foxes and Beavers. Again the photographer is well catered for with close and unobscured views available. The near future includes Amur Tigers and Leopards which hopefully will be well worth the visit. The park also includes a drivethrough 'safari' section where the animals are very accustomed to cars and will approach to very close quarters and pose for their photo; here can be found Buffalo, Moose, Reindeer, Przwalski's horses and Yak amongst others. Also in this section are the Red Deer - magnificent in the Autumn. The park is rarely hugely busy due to its location so its never a real problem getting yourself or your car into the perfect shooting position. Quite apart from the animals the park can be appreciated for its location nestled below the surrounding mountains, it can be an enjoyable place just to go for a walk around enjoying the scenery. The staff are generally very knowledgeable and friendly. There is a small gift shop and cafe serving sandwiches, panninis etc and good toilet facilities.

I have made use of my membership to the Scottish Zoological Society and paid several visits to this facility. In the last year I have noticed it has taken on the appearance of being run down, as is Edinburgh Zoo. The animal exhibits lack wow factor, apart from the Wolves enclosure. Apart from the wildcat and the wolves there is very little that made a lasting memory. The site has a small cafe - which serves a limited range of food, which is well cooked and presented. Staff are friendly and will talk to you and tell you about the animals. A pleasant 3 - 4 hours stroll with the potential of getting some great shots
