Venue information
The traditional way to travel to the Isle of Skye was by ferry but the majority ceased as soon as the toll bridge opened in October 1995. A ferry still runs all year round from Mallaig to Armadale and a much smaller ferry is still in operation to bridge the gap between Glenelg and Kylerhea. This ferry is only 9.7 miles from the A87 and can save you driving many miles around to the Kyle of Lochalsh to cross the bridge.
The ferry takes you across to Kylerhea from where you follow this picturesque road for about 10 miles before joining the A87 again, this time on the Isle of Skye.
This route can cut your mileage and let you drive on some of the best unknown Scottish roads, and there are plenty of landscape photo opportunities, especially overlooking Kylerhea. The Glenachulish ferry makes an interesting documentary subject itself – it’s one of the only turntable ferries still in operation.
Venue Verdict
Well worth a visit if you want to drive some of Scotland’s best roads, and there’s plenty of photo opportunities for the wildlife photographer. An otter haven can be found in Kylerhea.

Spent some time in Kylerhea in September. Lots of photo ops - landscapes and wildlife. As well as otters and seals sea eagles can be seen on a regular basis. Think it is best to leave Skye via the Glenelg ferry. There are superb views on the way to join the main A87 including a view of the Five Sisters from way up high. Well worth a visit - at least once.
