The Gap of Dunloe

seperator graphic

Venue information

The Gap of Dunloe is a natural pass that scythes through the impressive mountain range of Macgillycuddy’s Reeks in County Kerry, South West Ireland. The Reeks contain Ireland’s highest peaks, and soar up dramatically on either side of the single track road that twists through the Gap. Great photo opportunities exist all the way along the gap, as there are five lakes, countless derelict houses, an old stone bridge and a selection of alpine flora as well as the more obvious mountains. In high season, the biggest problems are the hoards of tourists and pony-and-trap rides, so a mid-week, out-of season visit is highly recommended. If you’re feeling energetic, walking from one end of the Gap to the other is a good five-mile trip, but the best views and shots can be found between Kate Kearney’s cottage and the Head of the Gap. This entails about an eight-mile round trip, so make sure you’ve got a good pair of walking boots. It’s also worth taking a waterproof, as weather can be changeable.

Venue Verdict: Huge mountains, five lakes, a twisty lane, derelict houses and stacks of foreground interest makes for a memorable day out. Ever-changing weather is common in this area too, so if conditions aren’t good, try waiting for five minutes!

I remember feeling like I had wandered into a magical land when I rode my bike through the Gap of Dunloe. The summer greenery was out of this world. Nearly hit the pavement on a steep incline when the guy in front of me stopped abruptly, but nevertheless highly recommend going through it on your own leg power.

Any visit to Co Kerry is not complete without a trip through the Gap of Dunloe. Many photo oppertunities along the way. Weather can be a bit "damp" so be prepared.

This has to be among one of the top locations in Ireland, and the after hours aren't bad either.
