Saltwick Bay

Directions: Saltwick Bay is just south of Whitby on the Yorkshire coast. Travelling north on the A171, turn right just after the village of Hawsker and follow this minor road for about 1 1/12 miles to a right turn to a small holiday park. You’ll find a few parking spots just before the entrance to the holiday park. There are some rough footpaths down into the bay from the car park. Grid ref NZ917107.
Accessibility: Car parking is severely limited, and the footpaths down the cliff can be tricky to negotiate in places. Once in the bay the flat rocky beach can also be as slippery as ice.
Costs: None
Best time to visit: The east-facing coast means that sunrise is the perfect time to visit Saltwick Bay.

Venue information

The path down to Saltwick Bay ranges from average to the downright difficult depending on the conditions underfoot. In the wet, or after a severe storm the footpath can be treacherous, so take care. In the bay itself the top of the beach is sandy and quite welcoming, but venture out and the flat, ice-like surface of the rocks can also be a danger. Unfortunately this is where many of the best shots are to be had, though. One of the most popular viewpoints is to the right of the bay with the easily recognisable stack of Black Nab in the background. This area is at it’s best at mid to low tide, when the rocky scar is exposed. But as well as the obvious danger of slipping, watch out for the tide catching you unawares. Because of the flat shore it rises quickly and can cut your route back to the shore.

Venue Verdict: Despite the difficulties getting down to the bay it’s an iconic and superb coastal location.

I got up early sunday at 5am to go and take the sunrise and it was perfect. The sun also sets in this bay in the summer, 2 for the price of one!

A must be location for any keen landscape photographer, there are lots of stunning images on the web (flickr), be care ful of the tides, do not venture onto the slabs on an incoming tide unless you are carrying a life boat with you. absolutly worth the effort
