Venue information

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway runs all the way from Pickering to Grosmont and recently its established a mainline connection to run its trains to the historic port of Whitby. There are four stations on route from Pickering to Whitby including Levisham, Newton Dale Halt, Goathland and Grosmont. One of the most spectacular stops for walkers would be Newton Dale Halt, situated in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors and it makes a wonderful place to start your walk or photography expedition. This is a request stop though so always make an enquiry with the guard on the train before you start your journey and wave down the train if you’re looking to board it from the platform.

The railway is very well known for it’s involvement in the ITV drama programme - Heartbeat. The village of Goathland is the location that’s used for the setting of Aidensfield and it’s only a 5 minute walk from Goathland station into the village. There are also plenty of walking opportunities from Goathland station onto the Moors, just head to the end of the station and you’ll find the start of the footpath heading towards Darnholme and Beckhole. For those interested in the railway itself, Grosmont makes an interesting visit and it’s the base of the engineering works. Viewing galleries of the engine shed and a railway shop are signposted from Grosmont’s station platform.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is one of the most scenic railway routes to travel in the country and the railway runs an intensive service throughout the year and more information on the timetable of trains can be found by heading to their website.

My father was a keen photographer and railway enthusiast. He used to drag us around various engine sheds and every time he saw smoke coming from the distance the car brakes were slammed on and a vantage point was found for a picture or 2!

The railway has some fantastic photgraphic locations. I particularly like Fen Bog and the climb past Beck Hole towards Goathland. I visited on 03.09.08 and will be again when the gala is in full swing 27th September.
