Flamborough, South landing
| Directions: |
Flamborough is located around 2 miles east of Bridlington on the Yorkshire coast. To get to the south landing take the B1255 into Flamborough, then turn right just after the church, following the signs to the lifeboat station. You’ll find a car park on your left just under a mile down this road. Grid ref TA231692. |
| Accessibility: |
There is plenty of car parking, and a road leads straight down to the shore. Difficult wheelchair access due to cliffs, steep gradients and stoney walk along headland. Some wheelchair access from North Landing (signposted) where the beach can be accessed, but this is still steep and will only be viable for those with strong physical skills. South landing is unsuitable for wheelchair users. Once on the beach, like many rocky coastal locations the shore can be slippery and tricky to walk on. |
| Costs: |
Parking costs 70p per hour in summer and 45p per hour in winter. |
| Best time to visit: |
The perfect time for visiting the south landing at Flamborough is when sunrise coincides with high tide. Otherwise any early morning or sunrise offers the best conditions for this location. |
Venue information
Like most coastal locations the character and viewpoints available at the bay at the South Landing vary greatly with the tides. At high tide you only need to walk just past the slipway of the lifeboat station to find the perfect locations. The sea lapping around the chalk boulders that line the higher areas of the shore are the perfect foreground for the views along the cliffs to the east and west. There are normally some darker rocks dotted among the bright white chalk, which are worth seeking out to provide a focal point in the foreground.
At low tide you’ll need to give yourself plenty of extra time to search out the sea, as it can be a good distance from the cliffs. Further down the beach the chalk boulders are replaced by flat, slippery, seaweed-covered rocks too, making walking across the beach slow and slightly hazardous to your dignity. This change in the beach makes the character at low tide a more desolate and barren location compared to the somehow ‘friendlier’ appearance of the rounded boulders at the top of the beach.
Venue Verdict: The South landing at Flamborough is perfect for wide-open views of the shore, and towering cliffs. At high tide it’s also possible to get great shots without having to walk too far as well.
