Venue information
This reserve forms part of the Somerset Levels and Moors, one of England's largest remaining wet meadow systems. Large numbers of wading birds breed here and the winter floods attract Bewick's swans, and thousands of teals, wigeons and lapwings. West Sedgemoor is also important for its insect and plant life. In spring, nesting grey herons and little egrets are found at Swell Wood. Bluebells, primroses and orchids are prevalent in the woodland. Curlews may also be seen displaying over the wet meadows. It is also possible to see Roe deer browsing in the fields in autumn.
Venue verdict: Heron’s and egrets need approaching with care and a long lens will make photography easier. Keep an eye open for deer in the autumn.
