Wells-next-the-sea

Directions: Wells-next-the-sea is located off the A149 coast road in north Norfolk. To reach the beach you have to take the B1105 then turn onto the minor road that runs alongside the harbour and the miniature railway. There’s a car park at the end of this road next to the lifeboat station and holiday park.Grid ref: TF910456.
Accessibility: The car park is only a short walk from the beach, but it’s not always open very early in the morning. So for sunrise shoots you may have to park at the harbour and walk the mile or so to the beach.
Costs: The beach car park is pay and display.
Best time to visit: The light is perfect early in the day on this north-facing coast, although sunset can also be worth a visit especially during the summer when it’s more northerly than during winter.

Venue information

The beach at Wells-next-the-sea is one of the hidden gems of the Norfolk coast. Driving along the road to the car park there are few clues of the beautiful views that lie beyond the trees. From the car park, take one of the footpaths over this tree-covered ridge to find one of the most secluded and self-contained beaches on this wind-swept coast. The character of the beach is entirely dependent on the tide. At low tide you can’t even see the sea as the water retreats so far; at high tide it laps just a few yards from the line of beach huts that nestle under the trees. This variation presents a huge difference in the photographic opportunities open to you: at high tide you can shoot views with both the beach huts and the sea in frame, while at low-tide you should almost forget about the sea and go for the host of subjects that line this beach. It’s also worth visiting Wells harbour for some completely different views of this coast.

Venue verdict: With the classic combination of beach huts, sandy beaches and harbour, Wells offers a host of photographic opportunities. If you’re after an old-fashioned seaside location it’s among the best.

Or vis versa, we walked from the car park (£3.50) along the beach all the way to Wells, very quiet (early Sept, after schools restarted) depending on you pace and how many stops for photos, approx 1.5 hours. Stopped and took loads of pic's of the colourful huts. Had a cup of tea in the cafe by the car part in Wells, then walked back through the woods on the other side of the sand dunes, again about 1.5 hours. Great place for taking pictures, mine were on a sunny day with the tide out, i am sure that there are many days that would be more 'moody' where you could get a different perspective, i will be going back!

This is an ideal place to get wonderful beach/sea shots. The colours in the huts are contrast well against the pine woods. I have used the location a number of times and always got very pleasing results.

Excellent place for a photo opportunity as well as a great walk, from the beach at Holkham then back via the pine woods

Been here 3 times over the last year, it really is one of the best in East Anglia. the beach huts, the seals, and the different locations all within walking distance from the car park.

if you are into action shots, pick low tide at a weekend and wander toward the sea and be ready to pan the wind surfers on the sand. The beach huts are begging for a picture too. Just watch out for sand in your equipment as it can be windy! The harbour is photogenic but beach and harbour/town are not walking distance from one car park so you'll be paying twice for parking. I don't recall seeing any access for wheelchairs to the beach. For smaller boats drive to Morston Quay further up the coast (National Trust members free parking). Don't wear your best shoes!

This a great location, it's easy to get to and once you are there easy to find parking. We went on a Sunday at low tide and there were not that many people around so nice to take photo's without getting in the way. Although it said no dogs on the beach I must have counted 20 during the time we were there. The beach is great with dunes and the changing sheds make a lovely colourful photo. You can also walk back into town and there are some interesting boats moored to get snapping on. Get it on the right day (it was a bit overcast) and it's certainly worth a day out.

I have visted this area so many times, but never picked the right time of day, mostly find my self a little futher up the coast. Looks like you picked the right time for the incoming tide.
