Brancaster Beach

Directions: Access to Brancaster beach is located down a small minor road off the A149 coast road along the north of Norfolk. It’s signposted from the centre of Brancaster village, next to the church.
Accessibility: There’s a large pay and display car park a few yards behind the beach.
Costs: Pay and display car park
Best time to visit: For the most extreme weather and isolated atmosphere it’s hard to beat sunrise at this beach, during winter.

Venue information

The isolated feel of Brancaster beach is one of the main reasons it’s such an amazing location. The sands seem to go on forever, and at low tide the sea can appear to be miles from the top of the beach. At high tide, though, you’ll find waves crashing against the sea defences that protect the golf clubhouse near the car park. Interrupting this emptiness you’ll find the remains of old breakwaters and sea defences along much of the beach at low tide, which make excellent focal points in an otherwise vast empty space. You really need the right sky to make the most of this location, as on a cold, overcast day it can feel like the ends of the earth. Like much of the north Norfolk coast, watch out for the tides at Brancaster as they can change quickly and cover great areas in only a few minutes.

Venue verdict: Landscape locations don’t come much more isolated and desolate than this beach, but in the right light it can produce stunning results.

If the light is right there really is a no more perfect place to shoot a sandy beach in the UK Early summer mornings are probably the best as the sun rises along the north east end of the beach and Winter sunsets ar great too. The only drawback now with the north Norfolk coast is parking, you used to be able to buy one ticket and it was transferable to all car parks along the coast, now it's £3.50 a throw, if you are shooting all along the coast in a day it will cost you in excess of £20 to park Pongo
