London's South Bank may well be one of the most photographed locations in the whole of the UK, it's easy to get to, provides plenty of visual stimulus and there's lots of variety. Despite being saturated with photographers, (it's hard to get a shot without a compact wielding tourist in sometimes!), a moment of inspiration and a bit of luck can still result in eye-catching images.
Throughout the day and into the evening you'll be presented with a plethora of subjects, from the Millenium Bridge, the London Eye and St. Paul's Cathedral to the street performers and crowds lining the embankment.
For the adventurous, there's always a gaggle of skateboarders and BMX riders making use of the undercover architecture. It never fails to draw a crowd but keep your wits about you when the bikes and boards start zooming around.
All in all, South Bank provides a lot of potential pictures in a manageable area, ranging from fantastic archtecture to gritty, urban grafitti and street life. It's full of people, so for those new to photography, it's easy to blend in and you certainly won't feel too conspicuous roaming around with a camera.

If you go at dusk or during the early part of the evening, you can get some great long exposure shots across the river. I actually manage to take some from inside the Art Gallery (cant remember if it is the Tate Modern) which looks across the bridge to St. Pauls. I simply set my tripod up outside on one of the balconies of the Gallery
