Venue information
Set in a Kentish sunken valley, Ightham Mote is a rare example of a moated medieval manor house. It dates from 1320 and has had many late additions and alterations made to it by the National Trust who now own and preserve the property.
Ightham Mote was the subject of the National Trust's largest ever conservation project, which began in 1989 and was finally completed in 2004. On visiting the mote it’s well worth taking a look at the exhibition in the visitor reception, which shows the extent of the work completed over the 15 year period. Ightham Mote has many special features, including a Great Hall, Crypt, Tudor Chapel with a hand-painted ceiling and the private apartments of the American donor Charles Henry Robinson. Another popular feature has to be the Grade I listed dog kennels, situated in the recently restored re-cobbled picturesque courtyard.
Elsewhere at Ightham Mote there are extensive grounds and beautiful gardens that are kept in pristine condition throughout the year. There are plenty of water features around the outside of the grounds too that can make interesting subjects to photograph and many woodland walks only a stones throw away from the Manor House.
Verdict:
Well worth a visit if you happen to be visiting Kent. There are some fantastic reflection shots to be had of the Manor House from the surrounding Mote.
