Petersfield

Directions: Petersfield is roughly 26 miles south of Guildford and can be reached easily off the A3 signposted Petersfield town. If you’re approaching Petersfield from the south, it’s only 18 miles from Portsmouth and the fastest route is the A3 northbound. The easiest route into the town from the south is via the B2070. There’s a strong rail connection from London Waterloo station, too, and Petersfield lies on the Portsmouth line.
Accessibility: During the week Petersfield is a rather sleepy town but at the weekends the town is a hive of activity with a main market held on the first Sunday in the month on the square. Parking can be difficult in peak summer times.

Venue information

Petersfield is a classic British market town, set in the East of Hampshire, and easily accessible from the A3 that runs from London to Portsmouth. There’s also a railway station in the town meaning you can get from London Waterloo to Peterfield in just under an hour. The town itself is situated on the northern slopes of the South Downs and is classed as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

In its heyday, Petersfield was well-known for its regular sheep, horse and cattle markets as well as many annual fairs. Although the cattle markets have ceased, the town’s farmers’ market remains and is held on the square in the centre of Petersfield on the first Sunday of every month. This it self brings many documentary photo opportunities to a photographer.

To the east of Petersfield town centre is the large-sized Heath Lake. Early morning fishermen can be found dotted around the lake on Saturdays and Sundays and there’s a pleasant footpath around the perimeter. If you’re into wildlife and bird photography, swans and geese can be found around the water’s edge; well worth a 10-minute walk from the centre of the town if you’re in the surrounding area.

On overview Petersfield is a peaceful town and given a little exploration can offer a photographer plenty of interesting photo opportunities. Why not explore it for yourself in the autumn when the colours of the trees in and around the town are most impressive.

This quaint little town has plenty to offer. I live just down the road from it and and have enjoyed walking through the town on a number of occasions. There is plenty to offer from architecture to flora and fauna. Plenty of history as well. Well worth a day out.
