Venue information

Summerseat is a small village that lies in the Irwell Valley on the course of the River Irwell. It’s roughly 4 miles North of Bury and 13 miles North of Manchester and it makes a pleasant village to visit for it’s picturesque scenery.

At one end of the village lies an impressive railway bridge that spans the River Irwell and this is part of the East Lancashire Railway that runs from Heywood to Rawtenstall. There are plenty of photo opportunities overlooking the river and if you happen to time it right the sight of a steam locomotive crossing the bridge makes a wonderful spectacle.

Head to the South of Summerseat and you’ll find Wood Road Lane. Follow this for 200 yards and you’ll spot a public footpath that forks up the bank on the left. Follow this footpath across the railway and you’ll soon find a couple of impressive waterfalls that drop away to the right hand side. Access can be difficult so ensure you wear walking boots if you plan to get closer to photograph these falls.

Summerseat is a beautiful picturesque village that’s well worth a visit if you happen to be passing by. It can make a great place to base yourself if you’re looking to visit Bury town centre at the weekend as it’s easier to park and the preserved railway runs into the heart of the town.

great steam train photography particularly on cold winter sunday mornings as steam trains have to work hard out of summerseat on the incline towards ramsbottom best location to shoot is from above the tunnels or anywhere around the tunnel end of the viaduct ..
