Slimbridge Wetland Centre

Directions: Slimbridge Wetland Centre lies near the M5 between Gloucester and Bristol. Exit at either junctions 13 or 14 and follow the brown tourist signs. The nearest rail station is Cam and Dursley – a short bicycle or taxi journey away.
Accessibility: Open daily, except 25 December. Winter opening (Nov–Mar) is from 9:30am-5pm (last admission 4pm). In summer (Apr–Oct) closing times extend by 30 minutes. There are 15 bird hides at the site, 12 with wheelchair access. The main route around the site is paved, minor paths are compacted gravel.
Costs: £7.45 adults; concessions and family tickets available. Free to WWT members. Commercial photography attracts a separate fee.
Best time to visit: Winter

Venue information

There’s an astounding array of wildlife at Slimbridge, from water voles to waders, hares to dragonflies. It’s also home to the world’s largest collection of swans, geese and ducks. It’s the only place in the world where you can see all six species of flamingo. The reserve covers 325 hectares of internationally protected wetlands including a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), a Ramsar Site and Special Protection Area (SPA). Photographically some of the settings are less than natural but careful composition can make the most of the opportunity.

Venue verdict: There are better wetland sites to visit for photography, but Slimbridge has its own unique aspects that make it worth a visit.

Not a bad location to attend. Definitely plenty of photographers around (good or bad? - I prefer to have my own space, but you can share thoughts which makes a nice change I guess). Being Wetlands it is very flat... lots of birds and certainly more variety than a a city park. worth a go at this time of year, but I would not go back too soon.

£7.45 adults seems expensive. ---- Commercial photography attracts a separate fee. Does this mean if you turn up with a dSLR they demand a fearsomly expensive extra payment to take pictures?
