Humber Bridge

Directions: The Humber Bridge is part of the A15 that forms the link between Barton-upon-Humber and Kingston upon Hull. There are viewing areas at both ends of the bridge. To reach the more picturesque southern viewing area take the exit for Barton-upon-Humber off the A15. Then just before the town centre follow the signs for the viewing area. There’s a car park at the end of the road, which gives you access to the footpath alongside the river. Grid ref TA 027233
Accessibility: There is plenty of free car parking and the access to the paths is very easy.
Costs: None, unless you have to cross the bridge by car as there is a toll.
Best time to visit: The southern bank of the river can give good views of the bridge and the river at both sunrise and sunset.

Venue information

The 150m high towers of this huge bridge dominate the flat landscape of both north Lincolnshire and east Yorkshire. From the car park on the south bank of the river there are a few steps up to the footpath giving the best views of the bridge. For sunset shots you can stay pretty near to the car park as the sun sets behind the bridge. But for sunrise shots you want to head beyond the bridge along the footpath to the left from the car park. This will allow you shoot back towards the rising sun. From both sides of the bridge it’s possible to go off the footpath to get a little closer to the river. But the banks are pretty muddy and slippery, so take great care if you choose to go off the path.

If you have time it’s worth taking a walk over the bridge as you can really get a sense of the scale of the structure, and the views are great.

Venue Verdict: The views of the bridge are great, but location means that there aren’t too many other shots to be had nearby.

The Humber bridge is accessible from both ends, probably more so on the North Bank as there is a country park surrounding it in Hessle. Some of the best shots of the bridge are in foggy conditions or when there is low cloud. The sunset pics are great. With regards to other photo opportunities there are a number of local areas for snapping at both ends of the bridge. On the south bank the Far Ings nature reserve is a stones throw from the bridge with easily accessible hides available for bird photography. As mentioned before on the north bank there is the Humber Bridge country park with it's open meadows, wooded areas and lakes (although the lakes are not really that photogenic!) There is also a pub at the north end of the bridge as well. From the north end you can also walk under the bridge and one of the most impressive shots is from directly under the main tower looking across the river to the other tower.
