Stanage Edge

Directions: To reach Stanage Edge take the A625 from Sheffield, then the A6187 to Hathersage. Once you enter the village take the first road to the right. This road can be narrow in places so take care. Stay on this road, and after just over a mile take the road to the left. Immediately after the junction you’ll find some parking spaces on your right, and Stanage edge is visible beyond them. For easier access to the top of the ridge carry on past these car parking spaces, though, and then after the road veers to the right you’ll find a large car park and picnic area. From here take the left-hand path towards Stanage Edge. This leads up through a small wooded area and then up to an easier route to the top of the ridge. Grid ref SK238844
Accessibility: Good car parking, although it can get busy in the summer, but the walk to the top of the ridge is steep in places.
Costs: Main car park is pay and display.
Best time to visit: There are views both north-east and south-west, so both sunrise and sunset can produce great results. The colours of the foliage are best in late summer and autumn.

Venue information

Venue details: From the car parks near the foot of the ridge it towers above the surrounding landscape, but it’s really from the top of the ridge that this location comes alive. The almost vertical drops from Stanage Edge are breathtaking and the views across the landscape are an impressive sight. If you’ve parked in the main car park and taken the path through the small woods to the top of the ridge you’re almost in the centre of Stanage Edge. So you’ve got the choice of exploring either direction along the ridge. For sunset you want to be looking north-east along the ridge, that’s to the left when you reach the top of the footpath. Look out for the various outcrops of rocks that give viewpoints along the face of the ridge, and also useful foreground interest for your shots.

Venue Verdict: Some of the best views in the Peak district make this a great location.

Some great walks to be had with the camera, Numerous places to use rocks as foreground interest, and some rocks with carvings that create little pools of water, presumably for sheep to drink, this means that a polariser is useful. and most importantly in the main carpark mentioned above, there is a small coffee van most of the year (I think the lady who runs it says it shuts from Nov to Feb) well worth a visit.

One of my favourite locations in the Peak District. Easy to access, with plenty of parking all along the bottom of the ridge, good paths and spectacular views. The easiest climb to the top is if you park on the roadside parking at Fiddlers Elbow.
