Peveril Castle

seperator graphic

Venue information

There are plenty of viewpoints from the many hills surrounding Peveril Castle. Taking the path on the west side above the gorge (the same side as the remains of the castle) gives you spectacular views along the gorge to the castle. To get to this path you should ignore the signs to the castle from the centre of the village, and take the public footpath signs to the right of the castle. This will lead up a small road, then through a gate, to the footpath. After a short distance you should take the path up the hill to the left. From this viewpoint you can use the peaks of Mam Tor and Lose Hill as a backdrop, and the dramatic view of the gorge in the foreground. In bright conditions the contrast between the shadows of the gorge and the sky can be huge, so you’ll need to use an ND grad filter to cope with this.

Venue Verdict: The picturesque setting of Peveril castle makes it perfect for getting great images. The steep, strenuous climb to the top of the hill for the best views makes this a venue for fitter photographers.

Nice views over the Hope Valley from the tops of the hills, but theres no real easy route apart from using those legs, and it is a pretty strenuous climb. It can also get very wet and boggy, especially if you walk up the path through Cave Dale below the castle. If you dont fancy the uphill walk, then you could park on the roads near Mam Tor, then follow the public footpaths round to Peveril Castle. Not as strenuous, but it is still a fair walk.
