Millstones at Stanage Edge

Directions: These abandoned millstones are located at the southern end of Stanage Edge. From the A625 from Sheffield take the A6187 to Hathersage. Once you enter the village take the first road to the right. This road can be narrow in places, so take care. Stay on this road, and after a couple of miles you’ll find some parking spaces on your right, and the start of Stanage edge is visible to your left. There’s a footpath that heads straight for the rocks of Stanage Edge, and the millstones are laying just at the foot of these rocks. Grid ref SK250830
Accessibility: Good car parking, although it can fill-up quickly in the summer, and well-marked footpath lead straight to the stones, but it’s an uphill walk.
Costs: None
Best time to visit: There are views both east and west, so both sunrise and sunset can produce great results. The colours of the foliage are best in late summer and autumn.

Venue information

Venue details: There are many examples of abandoned millstones scattered throughout this area of the Peak District. But these ones that lie at the foot of the southern end of Stanage Edge are almost perfectly positioned for photography. They are also pretty easy to reach, being just a few hundred metres from the roadside car parking. Using them as foreground interest for a wider shot of the landscape you’ll need to pack a good wide-angle lens, and don’t forget the ND filters if you want to keep detail in both the stones and the sky if you are shooting at sunrise or sunset.

Venue Verdict: A classic Peak District scene, but still a great location if you are in the area.

One of the defining shots that probably most photographers who visit this area have in thier collection. Fiddlers Elbow is best for parking, or at Burbage Bridge where there is a proper car park. Getting a unique photo is hard though unless you get some unusual conditions.
