Venue information

Lathkill Dale is a beautiful little valley in the south of the Peak District. The heavily wooded areas of the valley at the end of the road near the start of the footpath soon gives way to more open countryside. All the way along this stretch of the river there are small waterfalls, and a weir proving some excellent photo opportunities. There's a more impressive waterfall about a mile along the footpath, just as the landscape turns into a more typical Peak District vista of open slopes and rocky outcrops. Remember to take a tripod along if you are thinking of using long exposures to blur the flowing water. An ND or polariser filter can also help you to get longer shutter speeds in bright conditions. If you tire of the landscape, there's also the possibility of a spot of bird photography. This river is one of the best areas in the country to see dippers small waterfalls and cascades.

Venue Verdict: It's not a dramatic location, but the small waterfalls and cascades can provide plenty of pictures.

The dale is very long starting down near Alport at Conksbury where the wiers are, through to Monyash where this end of the dale is a Nature Reserve. If you have any difficulty walking then you would be better off going from either Conksbury, or Over Haddon as the Monyash access route is VERY rocky, and sometimes muddy and slippery as the footpath routes through a disused quarry. Some lovely waterfalls though, and can get some shots of the birds on the river.

This place is a big favourite of mine. Very easy to get to, its walkable from Bakewell. Also not far awy is the extremely impressive Arbor Low stone circle which is one of the biggest in the country, after the well known ones in the south west. Nice pubs at Over Haddon and Monyash too. Recommended.
