Dove Dale

Directions: Dove Dale is located around 4 miles north of Ashbourne in the southern Peak District. Take the A515 north out of Ahsbourne, then take the minor road on the left signposted to Ilam Park. Just past the village of Thorpe you can turn right to reach the car park at Dove dale. Grid ref SK146509.
Accessibility: Plenty of car parking and good footpaths, although you do have to negotiate stepping stones across the river in places.
Costs: Pay and display car parking.
Best time to visit: The leaves will be at their best during the autumn, but otherwise Dove Dale can be a great location at almost any time of year. It does get very busy during the height of summer, though.

Venue information

Dove Dale is one of the most famous and popular areas in the southern Peak District. This is picturesque valley is a favourite of walkers, day-trippers and families thanks to good access and easy walking alongside the River Dove. From the car park you can walk along the river for a short way, with a set of stepping stones offering a route across it after about half a mile. Further along the river there are a series of weirs which can also provide good photo locations. The steep sided walls of the valley make it an impressive sight, but can make it a difficult location to photograph in sunny weather. In these conditions early and late in the day the river will be in deep shadow, making it almost impossible to keep detail in both these and the brighter areas of the scene. Overcast weather can help make it easier to capture the beauty of Dove Dale, but you may need to use a composition that excludes the sky to avoid your shots looking flat and lifeless.

Venue Verdict: A beautiful area, but it's not easy to photograph well.

If you get there early enough there is a good chance of getting the opportunity to photograph dippers as well. Once too many people appear though they will be gone.

Dovedale is pretty close for me, as I live in Derby. Its about a 40 minute drive, so is good for a quick morning jaunt! Access is easy enough, through Ashbourne and then off on to B roads toward Thorpe and Ilam. If you are after an easy walk during the summer, and don't mind lots (and lots!) of people, then this is the place for you. If you prefer your scenery a little less crowded, then its best avoided during the summer, as it’s a real honeypot spot! The stepping stones across the river at the foot of Thorpe Cloud get upwards of a million visitors a year! As ever, I'm an early bird and I get there very early - normally an hour before sunrise. My favourite spot is across the river and a quick hike to the top of Thorpe Cloud to catch the sunrise. I have done that several times now, and have yet to meet another person - you have it to yourself (unless I'm there of course!!). The trail past the stepping stones takes you toward the village of Stanshope, and the river follows you along the way. There is plenty to photograph - Autumn is a great time to visit when the trees start to turn, and the river is starting to fill up again. Lighting can sometimes be a problem, as the steep valley sides can block the sun light. Best to check the direction of the sun before you go so not to be disapointed. The main car park at the Thorpe end of the trail is ruin by the National Trust and they charge. However if you get there early enough, and leave early enough then there is no one there to take your money!! I normally head home around 8.30-9.00am and its still empty at that time, save for the odd runner / walker.

I;ve only been during the winter and mid summer, and the winter shots were much better. In summer it is so busy you are unlikely to get anything worthwhile, even though the scenery is terrific. Try climbing Thorpe Cloud for views over the dale and surrounding countryside, or follow the river into the village of Milldale where a public footpath takes you over the hills back to Ilam village which is itself a picture. The car park at Dove Dale is nice and big and has toilets and an ice-cream kiosk.
