Sunkenkirk stone circle

Directions: Sunkenkirk is located next to Swinside farm, a couple of miles west of Broughton-in-Furness in the southern Lake District. Follow the A595 west over Duddon Bridge until you get to a minor road on your right for Cragg Hall. The track leading to Swinside is just before you reach Cragg Hall, and the stones are in a field just before you reach Swinside farm. Parking can be difficult as the roads are narrow with little space to park. Alternatively, park on the A595 and walk along the roads to reach the site.
Accessibility: Car parking can be pretty difficult, and it’s a fair walk along a farm track to reach the stone circle.
Costs: None
Best time to visit: The viewpoints along the track make it best to visit at sunrise, or early morning for the best light.

Venue information

Sunkenkirk stone circle may not be as famous as Castlerigg or Stonehenge, but it’s still an impressive sight. It’s one of the most intact stone circles in the country, and deserves to be more famous than many other sites. This is largely due to it being less accessible than the more popular Castlerigg site. This lack of popularity makes the journey to Sunkenkirk feel more of an adventure, though, and you’re unlikely to have to contend with crowds of tourists.

Venue verdict: The stones are very well preserved and there’s a very special atmosphere, but poor access and lack of different viewpoints make it more challenging to shoot than some other sites.
