Blea Tarn

Directions: Blea Tarn is located south of Langdale Fell around 6 miles north west of Ambleside. Follow the signs for the New Hotel at Langdale on the B5343. At the end of this road turn left onto the minor road that leads to Blea Tarn. This road winds precariously uphill, and is single track in places. Around a mile along this road you’ll spot Blea Tarn on your right, and there’s a pay and display car park on the left
Accessibility: Blea Tarn is a very short walk from the car park, and there are plenty of footpaths around it. The shores of the tarn can be a little wet in places, so waterproof walking boots or wellies are a good idea.
Costs: Pay and display car park.
Best time to visit: The fells surrounding Blea Tarn make it best to shoot it just after sunrise or before sunset when the light will reach the landscape.

Venue information

Blea Tarn is one of the most popular spots for photographers in the Lake District, but that doesn’t mean you should avoid it. With small groups of trees surrounding the shores and the majestic fells as a backdrop, you can get shots that look as though you’ve trekked into the remotest area of the Lake District just a short walk from the car. Shooting from the south shore with the small fence in the foreground is one of those iconic views, but you can easily take the footpath round the west of the tarn for a less-photographed view. It’s worth keeping a watch out for cars travelling along the road spoiling your shots if you want to maintain the illusion of a remote location, though.

Venue verdict: Stunning views and parking nearby make Blea Tarn an ideal location for those wanting the remote look without a long walk. Beware the tricky roads leading to the car park, especially in bad weather.

Get there early just after sunrise is best and if you get a still day reflections are stunning.
