New Forum Issues

1. Text copied from a post you're replying to isn't correctly formatted in the archives.

2. Making a reply doesn't seem to allow quoting a previous post, except by cut and paste

3. Search engine. Still misses things. I tried two obscure terms, "Rottingdean" and "Steyning" which both occur in the thread "Inspiration from Brighton":

http://prelive.photoanswers.co.uk/Community-Landing/Forum-Landing/Forum-Categories/Topic/?&topic-id=19227

with no results found. I tried other words first, and then went to this thread as having some place names that I doubted occurred anywhere else.

4.The need to retype thread names.
I have made a post now, and there were a couple of points that came from that. First, that I had to retype the thread name. That's a new requirement that adds to the effort of replying. We could always change the heading, so I suppose that this forces people to consider whether they want to change it, to make it clear who the reply is to. But I think that there will be adverse comment about a backward step.

5. No spelling checker. The other point is that one of the complaints that has been going since the year dot is the lack of an English spelling checker. At the moment, there seems to be none at all, which is bad news for me since I rely on the checker to pick up typos. Is this one of the "coming later" features?

6. I don't seem to be able to edit my own post.Amplification. This is a browser issue. Using Opera as the browser, I can edit other people's posts, but not my own. Using Firefox, I am able to edit my own posts. By not being able to edit, I mean specifically that the edit box comes up with no text, and in blue. A screen shot has been emailed.

7. Listing the forum members; it would be good to be able to jump directly to a letter, rather than having to scroll through. In my case, I was interested to see who had bagged the user name that I would have preferred to use, and it took a fair degree of scrolling. Using the search button picked up all usernames that contained the character I typed in, which is not quite the same thing.

8. Posted "1 minutes" ago? It may disappear quickly with the passage of a few seconds, but I dislike this sloppy programming.

9. Under the column of mods, there's a "Meet them all" link, which appears to perform a search function returning no results.

10. See point 3 above for text spilling out of the box. This spill occurs in Firefox, but displays correctly in Opera.

11. Looking at the "Latest posts" tab, I found myself in "Forums>ClubForums>Archives" but I can't find that from the "Forum" page. OK, found that. It's the Gallery, But the "Latest posts" button gets me to the text of the comment, with no way that I've yet found to get to the photo directly.

12. The "Browse by" sidebar on the left seems erratic. When used from anywhere other than the top level "Forum", it seems to return no results at all, for any of the possible "Date Topic Created" or "Most Recent Reply". Even used from the top level with Firefox, this thread doesn't show up.

13. The Gallery. I can't find any way of editing the "Photographer's Comments" once posted. I have now, but going via my profile.

14. It's tantalising seeing how many other users are currently online, but being nosey, I'd like to know who they are (some forums show this, although give individuals the choice of remaining anonymous).

15. I have an inbox, but no visible outbox to hold what I've written to others. It can sometimes be useful to have this available.

D'oh!

stephen you beat me to the things i was going to say.
Editing the Original Post of a thread i do think we shouldnt be allowed to do... stepehen i will add a  "hello " to yours in a min to see if edited by mod bits show up in any different way... if not then could this be a good and implementable idea?
back to the point.... i do think that the member who made the OP should be able to edit the original post........ god forbid the spelling police or some rather strange typo etc. but it should be clear on an original post that it has been edited.

agree with username by alphabetical, but this could be dealt with later possibly as i'm sure we will find many more bugs lol

Ooooh can we have a macro madness room in taking pictures please :roll eyes:
even since my macro madness thread i see more questions coming up when there is much info on there..... if its a room and not hidden it will be muchos helpful

would say one for tripods but as thats a standard question about general accessories its not really needed... BUT is it actually likely we will be able to sticky things in the future? as that would be useful to sticky at top within general accessories

Seems to be a browser issue. I was using Opera 9.23. On Firefox, I can edit.

New forum issues

Made from a new account just created, to see what happens when I try to edit. I am using Opera at the moment.

Interesting. I can edit it, no problem.

Time to log off from Firefox, and log in again under pilliwinks using Opera

Back in as pilliwinks, and using Opera. And editing seems to work

OK, really curious. As pilliwinks, I can edit StephenBatey's posts, but not my own in Opera, because I just tried to amend my post above..

Kirstie, can you edit your own posts, or only mine?

I can edit your posts stephen, but not a thread starting post by anyone other than myself (i assume, having not started a thread yet)
i suggest if bold is working again that we use bold to inficate our edits to members posts - hmmm i still get "error executing command" will do this little bit with html code see it if works    - it doesnt! lol
I am also noticing that my firefox spell checker doesnt function inside these boxes...... def going to need a spell checker i think alot of people rely on it in old forum even if it's complained about being american

ooh errr

Ok well i just sent a mail to Stephen, my firefox spell checker not only just worked on that little box but is now working in this one as well...

hmmm try bold? OOOhhhh it worked where the ninja's hiding?!:ph43r:

last post in the main view of forum gives the OP as last poster not the most recent poster... could be confusing for people that use names and times etc to keep up to date with most recent posts

forum flaw

Am I understanding this correctly, that a moderator can edit another contributor's post?

If so, I feel that at the very least, the software should automatically, clearly identify the edited section and who it was edited by. Much as I trust you guys, I feel that it's a matter of principle that no-one other than the author should be able to anonymously edit a post.

If this is possible, then it's a serious flaw in the software and is open to abuse - unlikely, I admit, but nonetheless, just think of the possibilities and consequences if at some point in the future an error of judgment is made in appointing a moderator.

Terry

Actually, where it says "This Reply has been ....." ....... it wasn't - I tried to make some text bold - but it didn't work - nothing changed

preview?

Is it possible to preview your post before committing? I can't see an option to do so ...

moderator edits and preview

Hey terry
no its isnt possible to preview them at the moment.... you may have noticed that there is no spell checker yet, but i think it is one of the the things being looked into.

html code doesnt seem to work (see my edit above in stephens post)
and YES moderators have the power to edit... the software automaticly puts in that the post has been edited but it doesn't say where hence my suggestion that we strictly adhere to bold  being the signatory for where a post has been edited.
if bits have been removed then i suggest we say "section removed by moderator kirstiesparkle" then that shows who edited and if there is any qualms or problems then people will be able to send us mail.
a forum i was mod on a few years ago showed mod posts in a different colour.... this meant that it was always clear where and how we had edited.

I also suggest that while we dont have software that automatically highlights changes that if we do have to edit a post that all ready has bold type in that we also italicize or underline our bold edit.

making edits without it being clear is definitely out of the question and if any1 ever spots it from me or any1 else i would like them to mail all the mods.
