The term telephoto has become a general description of any lens with a focal length above 50mm. These lenses give a narrow field-of-view, allowing you to fill the frame with objects that are further away from you than when using a shorter focal length lens.

Technically, the term telephoto refers to a particular design of lens where the physical length is smaller than the focal length. It can also be used to refer to zoom lenses whose focal length ranges are above 50mm, such as 70-300mm.

A telephoto lens is also known as a long lens and is, typically, used by sports and wildlife photographers for filling the frame with distant subjects.
