PNG is an abbreviation for Portable Network Graphics and is pronounced ‘ping’. PNG is an alternative image file format to GIF or JPEG with advantages other each as it is a lossless compression format, with greater colour bit depth and supports Indexed Color, Grayscale, Bitmap mode images without alpha channels and preserves transparency in grayscale. The format is intended for distribution of files online, and is a file format option in the save for web feature of Photoshop.
