Hunting usually occurs when light levels start to go down. Cameras need a certain level of contrast to be able to focus and where there is not enough light there is not enough contrast. However, even when there is lots of light hunting can still occur - try photographing a sheet of pure white paper that fills the frame - there's still not enough contrast. I'm not sure why the description above suggests that the auto focus will go to the extremes of focus 2 times before usually locking on? Sometimes that may happen, but if the contrast is just not there the auto focus on't lock on no matter how often you try.
