The Extra Filter can be found in all versions of Photoshop, except CS4 and provides a sophisticated way to isolate foreground objects and erase backgrounds on a layer. It can be used to work around wispy or indefinable edges with the minimum amount of work.
To access the Extract Filter, go to Filter in the Menu bar and it’s the third option from the list. Inside the Extract dialog box you’ll find different tools on the left- and right-hand sides to specify which parts of the image you want to extract.
When you extract an object, Photoshop will erase the background to transparency. Pixels on the edge of the object will lose colour, so they can blend in with a new background without producing any noticeable colour halos.
Those working on CS4 don’t have the option of using the Extract Filter as it was deemed imprecise. The Extract Filter is part of an optional free download for CS4 users. Visit: www.adobe.com/cfusion/search/index.cfm?loc=en_us&term=optional%20plugins%20cs4
