E-TTL stands for Evaluative- Through The Lens and it’s associated with the Canon flash exposure system. It uses a pre-flash before the actual main flash is fired to achieve the perfect exposure. The E-TTL uses the same evaluative metering sensor that’s used for ambient metering unlike the TTL system, which has a flash metering sensor, located at the bottom of the mirror box.
Canon released the E-TTL II back in 2004 and this is now used throughout the EOS range. It’s meant to give more natural flash exposure and it utilizes lens distance information when you use compatible Canon lenses. It’s aimed to aid the photographer in the trickiest lighting conditions or when you’re shooting a subject that’s highly reflective.
