Also known as a directional pad or digital pad, the D-pad is used to describe one of the main buttons on a compact or D-SLR camera. It’s found on the back and lets you move through the camera’s menu system, change AF points and flick through your images in play mode. Although D-pads differ from camera to camera, most of them can be controlled by your thumb in shooting mode, meaning you can change settings in a matter of seconds. The size o can also vary; the majority of Canon D-SLRs feature small D-pads, whereas Nikon opt for larger ones that can be locked off to prevent you from accidentally hitting it.
