Bitmap graphics hold electronic data within an image in cells known as pixels. Bitmaps, also called Raster images, are the preferred choice of digital image-makers because pixels can hold detailed electronic data and therefore are capable of replicating subtle changes in colour or texture more accurately. Bitmap images are made up of a grid of pixels which are resolution dependant, enlarging the size of a Bitmap image without increasing the number of pixels within the grid will reduce the Bitmap’s image quality.
