Feathering

Feathering is a handy feature that’s used within image editing programmes and its purpose is to blur edges by building a transition boundary between a selection and it’s surrounding pixels. This gives an effect whereby the edges of a selection are much softer and less harsh than they were previously.

Feathering can be used in combination with the Marquee, Polygonal and Lasso tools by entering a feather value in the options bar. The lower the feathers value the smaller the feather between the selection and the surrounding pixels.

You can also vary your feathering settings by either going to Select > Modify > Feather or by going to Select > Refine Edge and vary the feathering slider within the Refine Edge dialogue box.
