Leicester-based Mark Humpage has a passion. Actually he has two. One is for the weather and one is for photography and he’s successfully fused the two to make his talent and his expertise rather unique.
Mark is currently undertaking a major project for 2007/2008. He is teaming up with TV producer Alister Chapman for The Elemental Project, a series of online films, photo journals, blogs and podcasts featuring hurricanes, tornadoes, volcanoes, deserts, aurora and other awesome natural events.
In Practical Photography’s June 2008 issue there is a short interview with Mark and several of his stunning images of the Northern Lights (aurora borealis). Mark has also produced his own PDF on how to shoot the Northern Lights that he’s kindly allowed us to provide here so you can download it. You can also watch a couple of short videos about his trip to Scandinavia. They’re beautifully filmed and well worth watching. You can learn more about Mark and follow his exploits at: www.elementalproject.com

More about Mark
Mark’s photographic passion for the elements started in the mid 90s after he became engrossed with documentaries on storms and tornadoes. This was when he discovered storm chasing. Mark was featured in Practical Photography in September 2007, when he was joined by editor-in-chief Andrew James, on a storm-chasing trip across Midwest America.
“Above all I was impressed by his knowledge and enthusiasm,” said Andrew. “He was dedicated to understanding more about the elements and documenting them on camera. It was a pleasure to spend time with someone with so much passion for what he did.”
Mark has embraced the digital revolution since its inception, and fortunately elemental photography provided him with a unique angle. His work is all about capturing the moment, with a thorough self-education on the subject at hand. He runs AFEW Ltd, specialising in elemental photography and media services. He started shooting digitally with the Olympus E-10. Natural progression led Mark to the rest of the Olympus E-System.
"I currently shoot with the stunning E-3 and superb Zuiko Digital Four Thirds lenses. My adventures require a system that performs in the most demanding of environments,” he explained.
