Leisure or PDCL courses are aimed to develop skills without the hassle of a formal qualification. PDCL courses in photography vary in length, although courses run at colleges are typically 2-3 hours per week for 30 weeks. Course subject areas could include digital photography, black & white photography, colour photography and printing and studio techniques etc.
Course fees will be high due to the course not leading to a formal qualification. Assessment will however be included and students will be expected to complete basic assignments and evaluate their work. If the idea of assessment puts you off, it could be worse. Without this assessment course fees would be even higher than the average of £500 for 90 hours study.
Overall, PDCL courses are fun and relaxed. They offer students the opportunity to learn new skills within a structured course run by a subject specialist, often a professional photographer. If you’ve been outside of education for a long period of time, this type of course will ease you back in gently.
